Rationale

From Island-wiki

I'm a computer programmer. As you may know from using computer software, programs come with version numbers, a major version number and a minor version number, e.g. v3.2, respectively. As the software is used more and more, the developers will release minor updates (e.g. v3.3) to address bugs and add small new features. This generally involves adapting the existing code to accommodate the fixes/features, often through hacks to work around architectural inadequacies in the original code. Eventually, a limit is reached... as some workarounds will correct one part of the code but cause unintended problems elsewhere, and some things can only be implemented up to a certain point; further development is impossible. At this stage, often a rewrite from scratch is necessary, and a new major version (e.g. v4) is written, from the ground up, to accommodate the desired behaviour through foresight of the limitations of the old model.

Over the years, I've noted many, many, many problems with the society we live in (particularly Western society). Having grown up in a youth movement, I feel compelled to action, to 'change the world' in effect. However, as a pessimist-realist, I came to the conclusion that our societal structures are simply too flawed from origin to keep on trying to mend, and I want to start something new and clean, a 'complete rewrite' of society, if you will -- and for all the same reasons that I mentioned using the software analogy. At the very least, I want an ideal environment for those living on the Island, and at most, I want to be an inspiration for others to copy.

To understand my motivations, it's quite important to understand what exactly I see wrong with our current society. And for that, you might want to read the Values section.

I must also note that it's quite important for me personally to first succeed in our current capitalist society, and use that [mostly monetary] success to start the Island. i.e. I'm not leaving our current society because I'm "quitting", but rather by having succeeded according this society's standards I feel more justified in starting something new, and different.
