Leadership
From Island-wiki
Let's be clear, so that no one gets the wrong idea. At least for now, the intended style of leadership will be a dictatorship. I have a very clear idea in mind of what I want for this place (as outlined by the wiki), and until things are firmly established, it's my way or the highway :) That's not to say I'm not open for debate and for discussing various issues, but ultimately I have final say, at least for now :)
Obviously in the long term, I'm not around forever, and I want a system of leadership that is sustainable, not only in terms of structure but also in terms of something that can ensure the long term survival of the values of the island. Let's play with some ideas on this page.
Current problems with leadership
- People will do anything to get and stay in positions of power, regardless of what's best for their country or the illusions they gave to their voters. We need to deal with the status that such leadership provides and see how we can work around this.
Problems with a straight Democracy
- People may feel they're voting of their own volition, although in reality they are voting according to the limited though spectrum forced on them by various political parties (through ads, or historical fact that they themselves created from being in power). The answer? Perhaps citizenship (and the right to vote) should be dependant on demonstration of suitable critical thinking and rationalization skills, and ability to recognize and not be affected by propaganda.
- Majority rules, but is it ok if 49% of the population are unhappy? What if we require a 2/3rds majority vote? What if those in power must reach consensus?
- Can people who don't agree with the guiding principles of the island emmigrate en masse and change the core values of the island by virtue of becoming a majority? How do we decide who gets citizenship and the right to vote?
Ideas
- Elected leadership entrusted to make big decisions vs referendum
- Direct election to various positions (!) vs elections of government and assignment to parties
